Holiness

It means literally “Set apart” or “set apart for God”. Another way of thinking about it is special or sacred.  In the Old Testament Temple certain object were set aside to be used strictly in temple worship. Since they were set aside for God they were called Holy. It is kind of like “good china” for the guests. God is holy because he is so great, he is in a class unto himself. It is impossible to compare him to anything else. It also suggests purity. God is set apart because he is PURE, we are not. People will fail us but God is holy. He is different from people…he is holy. A “holy people” are people who are staying away from trouble. They stay away or set themselves apart from troublemakers or situations that will get them in trouble. In people holiness is a process that starts when they decided to become a Christian.
